THE ASTERISK POPULATION
A short DOCUMENTARY FILM
"Salman Masih navigates the tricky waters of being a Christian minority in Pakistan as he prepares for an unimaginable, live threatening type of a dive"
Salman Masih has been living in the Christian slums of Lahore for as long as he can remember. Systematically forced by the State, he earns a living by manual scavenging, a practice banned in most countries around the world. Not being able to manage even the costs of the cheapest accommodation in the city, the film follows Salman as he struggles to make ends meet as he is forced out of his house by the landlord. The prospect of a similar or even worse future for his children looms over his head and as he prepares to dive in a manhole to open a blocked sewer without any protective gear. An intimate portrait and glimpse into the stinking legacy of suffocation and discrimination as they confront the welfare state of Pakistan; a state that denies caste-based practices but reality tells a different story.
